The Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

This certificate provides training in the theory and practice of TESOL, with application to a wide variety of teaching circumstances. Designed to offer a balance of current theory and practical experience in second language acquisition instructional methods, the TESOL certificate will prepare you with foundational knowledge and real-world skills to step into a career teaching English either here in the States or abroad. Courses provide an understanding of core knowledge in the field, including aspects of linguistics, the structure of English, methodology of teaching and assessing English, literacy development, curriculum development, and language assessment. Students in the TESOL program also have the opportunity to work as interns and tutors in the ESL Support Services, where they get direct experience working with non-native speakers of English.

The Certificate in Teaching College-Level Writing

This certificate is a post-baccalaureate program in Teaching College-Level Writing. To prepare students to teach college-level writing in a variety of contexts, this certificate engages students in the study of composition, pedagogical rhetoric, literacy, and writing program design. It allows graduate students to address individual situation, needs, and interests while learning within a diverse community. By offering flexible and interactive learning, the program provides a model for teaching writing and a forum where all teachers can learn and grow together as teachers of writing, and as writers too.
