Following the completion of his doctoral degree in Political Science from the University of Chicago, Dr. Donald Gerth served in a variety of positions in higher education both in the Midwest and in California. He came to California State University, Chico in 1964 as dean of Students and professor of Political Science. 

During his tenure at Chico State, Dr. Gerth authored numerous publications focused on public policy and higher education, including international higher education. While at Chico he was the recipient of a Danforth Foundation research grant, was associate vice president for academic affairs engaged in academic planning, and director of International Programs and vice president for academic affairs. 

During his career he was consistently involved in working with international educational organizations and programs, especially China. After leaving Chico State in 1976, he continued serving in leadership positions within the California State University system including the presidency of California State University, Sacramento.  He is now working on a comprehensive history of the California State University system.
