Billie Kanter

Staff

Office of the Vice President of Academic Affairs
Department of Industrial Arts
Department of Social Work
Department of Economics
1970-2007

Billie Kanter has not only benefited Chico State with more than 36 years of outstanding service but has also made Chico a better place by faithfully serving numerous community groups.

After briefly working for the Vice President of Academic Affairs and then the Department of Industrial Arts in 1970 and 1971, she began her long tenure supporting the University’s social welfare (later changed to social work) program. Kanter aided the program through other changes, including a merger with sociology in 1983 and a transition to the School of Social Work in 1999, until she shifted to the Department of Economics in 2005 for the last 2 1/2 years of her service. Thanks to her professionalism, friendliness, wisdom and dedication, she was an indispensable staff member through the years for faculty and students alike in the social sciences.

While on campus, Kanter was active on Staff Council, and continued to serve as its retired staff representative. She also was active in California State Employees Association and California State University Employees Union and produced its monthly newsletter for 15 years. For her college, she served on a dean selection committee and worked at Commencement for many years. In addition, she has been a volunteer and donor at KCHO and served 24 years as a volunteer usher at Laxson Auditorium. She was honored as Staff Council’s Employee of the Year in 1996.

Kanter’s community service is as impressive as her campus accomplishments. She has been an active member in the League of Women Voters and has been an Enloe Hospice volunteer since 2001. She has volunteered at the Torres Community Shelter for seven years and been on its board of directors the past four years. She was a longtime volunteer for Chico Velo as well as a board member, and last year she and her husband, Professor Emeritus Kirk Monfort, were honored by the cycling club with its Lifetime Achievement Award.

Kanter received her BA in sociology and secondary teaching credential from Chico State.
