Determining Payment Type

Are you compensating the student for work performed that directly benefits the university or CSE?

Click Yes if any of the bullets listed below apply:

  • The research or work would need to continue if student stopped research or work
  • Research or work directly benefits Chico State (the college or department) or CSE (department or Sponsored Program grant or contract)
  • Not every enrolled student in the program is required to perform the research or service
  • The payment is contingent upon current or future work performed and not required to earn a degree or class grade
  • An employee-employer relationship with Chico State or CSE exists

Click No if the payment can assist the student with other educational or living expenses, is for a prize or award, reimbursement for costs incurred by the student, or has a research or participant support component that is not considered compensation for services and it directly benefits the student’s pursuit of education. None of the bullets above will apply.

YesNo

If the primary purpose of the payment is to compensate a student for services provided to the university or CSE, or if the primary beneficiary of the student’s actions is Chico State or CSE, the payment would be considered compensation (wages) rather than Financial Aid.
