Instructional Assignments and Workload
Instructional assignments are determined by the appropriate administrator (normally delegated to the department chair), after consultation with the faculty member and in conjunction with department and student needs and the background of the individual. Teaching and other faculty assignments at Chico State are dependent upon departmental and student needs, which may change over time. A description of faculty responsibilities is found in Article 20 of the CBA.
Evaluations
Temporary faculty will be evaluated according to the professional standards of the disciplines in which they are appointed and as defined by the Department/Unit as appropriate to their work assignments, and in accordance with University Standards, the Unit 3 Collective Bargaining Agreement, and the Chico State Faculty Personnel Policies and Procedures.

Pay Schedules
Academic Year FacultyYour salary is payable in six equal monthly installments for each full academic semester employed.
- For a Fall only academic semester appointment, your first check will be issued at the end of the September pay period, and your final check will be issued in February.
- For a Spring only academic semester appointment, your first check will be issued at the end of the February pay period, and your final check will be issued at the end of the July pay period.
- For an Academic Year appointment, your first check will be issued at the end of the September pay period, and your final check will be issued at the end of the August pay period. Your check for the February pay period represents your first installment for the spring semester. You will receive your sixth and final paycheck for the spring semester at the end of the July pay period, and for the fall semester at the end of the August pay period.
- For an appointment of less than a full semester, your salary is payable in installments at the end of each pay period. If employed in August, your first paycheck will be issued at the end of September. If employed in January, your first paycheck will be issued at the end of February. If you are employed for a partial month, there will be an adjustment to one or more of your paychecks. Any residual pay will be issued shortly after your last day of work. Your college dean’s office can provide this information once the calculations have been completed.

12-Month FacultyYour first check will be issued at the end of your first month of employment, and your final check will be issued at the end of the last month of employment. You will accrue 16 hours of vacation (prorated for part-time) for each qualifying month of your appointment. Vacation not used will be paid out at the end of your appointment or when you no longer have an appointment that is eligible for vacation.

Classification Specific Details
- Lecturers, Counselors, and Librarians
- Coach FacultyThere is an annual review process for coaches, which is described in the Department’s Personnel Plan, a copy of which is available in the Athletics Department.
A current resume is to be submitted with this appointment document if you have not provided one to the unit within the last three years.
Please be reminded that coaches are required to comply with National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and conference and department regulations as a requirement of their job responsibilities. NCAA regulations include the stipulation that coaches found in violation of NCAA regulations are subject to discipline/corrective action, including suspension without pay or termination. - Summer Session Instructors
Summer term employment is a conditional appointment for a specific period of time and is contingent upon enrollments and budgetary considerations. A class may be cancelled by the President at any time due to low enrollment, budgetary reasons, or by layoff. If an appointment is cancelled, you will be paid on a pro-rata basis for each class taught prior to cancellation. You must meet the first class session.
If course enrollment is fewer than 20 students, your salary may be reduced by 5% for each student below 20 students. Such salary reduction shall not exceed 35%. If your course has fewer than 20 students enrolled as of the second class meeting, you may accept the reduced salary or withdraw from this appointment at that time, or the class may be cancelled by the President. In the event that you withdraw, you will receive compensation pro-rata only through the second class meeting. You will be notified as soon as possible should conditions require a salary reduction of this appointment. Reduced enrollment compensation shall apply only to summer term appointments. (CBA, Unit 3, Article 21.15)
Lecturers employed in a summer term in either state support or self-support summer sessions who meet the following criteria are eligible for Summer Health Benefits Stipend:
- Lecturers employed in the immediate preceding spring term and enrolled in CalPERS Health benefits; and
- Lecturers appointed who worked at least six (6) WTUs over the entire summer term; and
- Lecturers ineligible for CalPERS health benefits during any of the July, August, or September pay periods.
Sick leave may be accrued by part-time faculty during state support summer term employment up to the equivalent of a full-time position and may be used by all faculty during their summer term employment or any subsequent period of employment as specified in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA Unit 3, Article 21.23). Sick leave will not be accrued during self-support Summer Session employment per CBA 21.23 e.
Effective summer 2023, the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) determined that summer employment job codes 2357 from PCE and 2457 from stateside support classes are no longer eligible for CalPERS membership and will no longer count towards CalPERS service credit. If you receive a full year of CalPERS service credit during the academic year in another classification, this determination will not impact you.
- Additional Employment for Full-Time Faculty (Job Code 2403)
Your temporary appointment is a one-time appointment and is in addition to your current faculty appointment. To be eligible for this appointment, you must meet the criteria stated below:
- Limited to faculty unit employees whose primary appointment is full time, including individuals who hold multiple concurrent appointments that otherwise add up to a full-time equivalency (1.0 FTE).
- Faculty whose regular appointments are at a time base of less than 1.0 are not eligible for employment in this classification, unless it is necessary to assign a temporary faculty unit employee work more than 15 WTU in any academic term in order to meet the requirements of CBA provision 12.29 (a) or 12.29 (b), per CBA 12.29.d.
- The appointment must be for faculty bargaining unit work as described in CBA Article 20.
- The maximum time base of an appointment to additional employment is limited to 25% of full time, or an additional 0.25 FTE.
In addition to the above, employment in this classification must also meet one of the following criteria (per CBA Article 36.5).
- The employment is of a substantially different nature or outside of the faculty member’s primary normal appointment.
- The employment is necessary to meet a temporary faculty member’s entitlement to full-time work or to offer work to a part-time temporary faculty employee up to full time under CBA Article 12.29 (a)(8) or (b)(9).
Appointments in this classification are temporary and do not accrue vacation credits, sick leave, or other leave entitlements, nor is compensation pensionable.
- Substitute Instructional Faculty (Short-Term)The Substitute Instructional Faculty classification's hourly rates represent full payment for the services and include an allowance for preparation time and grading. The maximum appointment as a short-term substitute is 20 consecutive calendar days.
When all documentation is received in the Payroll Office, pay will be issued by the State Controller’s Office within ten (10) business days. - Visiting Faculty
Visiting faculty appointments are temporary full-time appointments for up to one academic year. Individuals appointed into this classification shall not be eligible for a subsequent appointment in this classification, per CBA Article 12.32.
