President Hutchinson's Post-Election Message

Announced on: Wednesday, Nov. 09, 2016

To:  Campus Community
From:  Gayle E. Hutchinson, President

The 2016 election has been one of the most tumultuous events in our nation’s history. All of us today, regardless of our political views, have thoughts and feelings as we look to the future. Even as our country’s leaders seek to reassure us during this transition period in government, some campus community members are feeling a wide range of strong, and sometimes troubling, emotions.

Please know that ours is a close-knit community committed to the health and well-being of everyone. We are equally firm in our commitment to supporting a diverse and inclusive community where people are treated fairly and equitably regardless of individual differences. We stand by the values of reason, respect and civility in fulfilling our mission of serving and educating students.

Any community members who are feeling anxious, fearful, or unsafe right now must know that I and other campus leaders are here for you. Staff and faculty are currently reaching out to student groups and individuals who have expressed concerns, and we will respond in other ways if needed to ensure campus members feel safe and supported. Any reports of taunting, harassing, and of course any threats and/or physical violence will be dealt with swiftly. In times of uncertainty, it is vital that we connect with and support one another, and be vigilant against hurtful and malicious acts.

For students who need further assistance, the Counseling and Wellness Center has free urgent walk-in services located in the Student Services Center Room 430. The center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. For more information, call 898-6345 or go to http://www.csuchico.edu/counseling/. Faculty and staff who need support can contact LifeMatters at 1-800-367-7474 or www.mylifematters.com for 24/7 counseling and other services. Thank you for everything you do to make Chico State such a special place. It is truly a privilege to be your President.
