Post-Election Letter from the AS President
Our campus, like our nation, is experiencing a difficult time. As we observe the democratic transition of power from one president to another there is a growing concern and even fear expressed by many students.
Now is the time when we must come together as a campus community to address these very real concerns, fears, and how to move forward regardless of our political views. It is a time to remember that as students we share commonalities. We are all here for the same reason: to get an education and improve ourselves.
The Associated Students is committed to ensuring our spaces on campus are safe and welcoming to all students, regardless of political viewpoints. As the President of the Associated Students, I am committed to providing opportunities for us to come together and discuss how to move forward as a campus community in light of recent events.
· On November 16th from 5pm to 8pm in BMU 220G there will be an open forum for those students who wish to participate in conversations with local Democrats about next steps after the election.
· On November 17th from 5pm to 8pm in University Housing’s “The Hub” there will be an open forum for those students who wish to participate in conversations with local Republicans about next steps after the election.
· On December 5th from 4pm to 7pm in the BMU Auditorium we will hold an Open Forum on Political Discourse where we will invite all students, including those who attended the first two forums, to come together and discuss what we must do as a campus community to move forward from this election. Food will be provided to all participants at each of the forums.
As always, the Bell Memorial Union (BMU) and the Wildcat Recreation Center (WREC) remain safe places for all of our students beyond just these forums. The elected Officers and Senators housed in the Government Affairs Office in BMU 220 are always more than happy to listen to any and all of your concerns or issues.
I look forward to seeing many of you at these forums and around campus. I am confident that together, we can ensure our campus continues to be the wonderful and engaging place it always has been.
