Provost Larson's Message to Faculty Regarding Supporting Students Post-DACA

Announced on: Wednesday, Sept. 06, 2017

Colleagues,

With Tuesday’s national developments regarding the ending of DACA, I want to express my sympathy and support for those who may be facing stress and uncertainty related to immigration status.

I recognize some of your students may be struggling with the potential need to travel, set meetings, and take care of things beyond the realm of their immediate academic studies, as well as significant stress and fear due to this decision. I urge you to support these students in whatever ways you can—in and out of the classroom—and provide accommodations in ways you feel are appropriate to ensure their success at Chico State.

It is imperative we remind all of our campus community members that our undocumented students’ enrollment at the University, tuition, or financial aid are not impacted by the change. CSU enrollment and tuition policies are not based on DACA status and, therefore, are not impacted. AB 540 grants eligible students the right to attend college and apply for California Dream Act financial aid.

Additionally, we have many resources on campus to support inclusive pedagogy in your classrooms and provide emotional support for those affected by the latest development. I urge everyone to read and direct your students to the Chancellor’s Office Fact Sheet and Chico State’s Our Democracywebsite. Other resources include:

I stand with President Gayle Hutchinson and Chancellor Timothy White in their messages to our campus communities, and remain committed to fulfilling our educational and public mission as a safe, welcoming, and inclusive learning and working environment for all.

Sincerely,

Debra S. Larson
