Civic Engagement

Community Action Volunteers in Education (CAVE)
CAVE’s mission is to provide Chico State students with meaningful volunteer opportunities, to develop student leaders, and to serve a broad base of community needs. Established in 1966, the student-run programs serve children, older adults, people experiencing homelessness as well as working on environmental projects and with local animal shelters.

First-Year Experience (FYE) Program
FYE is designed to help students successfully transition to University life, with an emphasis on academic and civic engagement and social well-being. FYE coordinates the annual Chico Great Debate and Town Hall programs, as well as many events related to the Book in Common.

Office of Civic Engagement
The office promotes, strengthens, sustains, and recognizes civic engagement initiatives that are consistent with the strategic priorities of CSU, Chico, based on respectful partnerships with the broader community, and aimed at developing socially and environmentally responsible students, faculty, and staff.

Accessibility Resource Center
The Accessibility Resource Center (ARC) works with staff, faculty, students, administrators, and community members to ensure that all aspects of campus life—learning, working, and living—are universally accessible. We promote and facilitate awareness and access through accommodations, training, and partnerships.

Black/African American Student Resources

Black Faculty and Staff Association It is the Black Faculty and Staff Association’s mission to foster healthy and nurturing relationships among Chico State’s black students, faculty, staff, and community. In doing so, they act as mentors to students and new professionals.

Campus Assessment Response and Education (CARE) Team
CARE is dedicated to promoting the safety and wellness of the Chico State campus community by addressing situations where students are displaying behaviors that are disruptive, threatening or concerning in nature. Make a report(opens in new window) of bias incidents.

Chicano/Latino Council (CLC)
The CLC's goals are to address Chican@/Latin@ concerns; further the understanding of the social and political climate in the Chican@/Latin@ community; and promote cultural awareness, leadership development, and the academic and professional advancement of Chican@s/Latin@s. CLC acts as a resource and advisory body for individuals and groups to pursue Chicano/Latino issues.

Community Legal Information Clinic (CLIC) CLIC is a student-run nonprofit organization that has been providing legal information to students and community members for over 40 years.

Multicultural and Gender Studies (MCGS)
MCGS is an interdisciplinary program in women’s, ethnic, and sexual diversity studies that offers courses that draw from a variety of disciplines. The curriculum furthers the University’s goal of providing students with the knowledge and commitment to be socially responsible citizens in a diverse democracy and interconnected world.

Veteran Education Support Team (VEST)
VEST promotes awareness of veterans’ issues throughout the campus community by providing a holistic approach to the delivery of veterans’ services. CSU Chancellor White's Open Letter on Immigration Policy (pdf)
Letter from the CSU Chancellor dated November 17, 2016, highlights that:

The CSU will not enter into agreements with state or local law enforcement agencies, Homeland Security, or any other federal department for the enforcement of federal immigration law;
Our university police departments will not honor immigration hold requests; and
Our university police do not contact, detain, question, or arrest individuals solely on the basis of being—or suspected of being—a person that lacks documentation.

WellCat Substance Abuse Prevention & Education
CADEC is committed to providing educational programs and services to the students, staff, and faculty of Chico State with the purpose of preventing substance misuse and to promote awareness and outreach within the community.

Chico State Basic Needs Project
This is a collaborative effort of campus and community-based programs with the goal to improve student success through the provision of supplemental food, nutritious meals, CalFresh USDA SNAP food benefit assistance, research-based education, emergency housing, emergency grants, and referral services for students experiencing food insecurity, hunger, displacement, homelessness, and poverty.

Counseling Center
For students who need further assistance, the Counseling and Wellness Center has free urgent walk-in services located in the Student Services Center Room 430. The center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. For more information, call 898-6345.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
The EAP is meant to provide professional assistance to state staff, faculty, and their families.

Hungry Wildcat Food Pantry
The Hungry Wildcat Food Pantry provides nutritious food, food program assistance support, and referral services for students experiencing food insecurity (those not having reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food).

Safe Place
The mission of Safe Place is to support and advocate for victims and survivors of sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and stalking through crisis intervention, prevention education, resources, and referrals.

WellCat Health CenterThe SHC can provide limited outpatient health services for acute, sub-acute illness, minor injuries, and transitional care for chronic issues during weekdays. SHC services include basic medical care, limited mental health care, preventative care, health education, contraception, STI treatment, travel medicine and immunizations with the support of an onsite lab, pharmacy and x-ray services.

Title IX
Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 is a federal law that prohibits sex discrimination in education. At Chico State, the Title IX Coordinator has primary responsibility for monitoring and oversight of the overall implementation of Title IX Compliance at the University; including coordination of training and education communications; and coordination with Student Affairs, Human Resources, and Academic Personnel on the processing of complaints and grievances alleging discrimination, harassment and/or retaliation to the extent they fall under Title IX and other members of the University community.

UMatter: Self-Care Matters
UMatter is a comprehensive initiative that focuses on promoting positive mental health behaviors such as advocating for folks who are touched by mental illness; educating people about resources; conversing about mental health and stigma; embracing self-compassion, vulnerability, and mistakes; and modeling compassion for others and bystander intervention.

UPD provides a safe environment for our campus community through proactive, progressive, and professional law enforcement services. In addition to emergency services (dial 9-1-1 or activate a Blue Light Phone for immediate assistance), UPD provides campus and personal safety information/support, including the Campus Connection shuttle. Chico State Pride
Our mission is to provide a safe place for all students on campus to respectfully discuss issues pertaining to the LGBTQ+ community and share our knowledge with the general student body. We strive to create leaders and support our members with political advocacy, education, and socialization.

Gender and Sexual Equity Coalition (GSEC)GSEC is a student-run activist organization, that strives to empower all students through its four programs: the Women’s Program, the Queer Program, the Trans Program, and the Outreach Program.

LGBTQ Faculty and Staff Association
This organization provides resources and/or mentoring for LGBTQ and questioning students, educating Chico State about issues affecting the LGBTQ community, and strengthening outreach to and retention of our LGBTQ faculty, staff, and students.
