Pillars of Excellence

Overview
- Academic Excellence
Social fraternities and sororities were all founded on similar values and hold their members to the highest standards. Academic Excellence is at the forefront of our social fraternities and sororities. During the academic year each organization and governing councils hold study hours, providing a specified time and space and snacks.
The office of Fraternity and Sorority Life prides itself in supporting the academic success of our student leaders by providing on-campus resources that students have access. We also further promote academic opportunities such as encouraging involvement in college specific clubs and organizations that are related to their majors.
- Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is an important part of joining a greek-lettered organization. Not only are our students exposed to working and collaborating with one another at the organizational level but at the council level as well. Each council has a specific EDI position whose responsibility is to raise awareness about EDI workshops and opportunities occurring on campus and off campus.
The office of Fraternity and Sorority Life is dedicated to instill a diverse community within our fraternities and sororities by providing opportunities for collaboration and providing an EDI training to all organizations. FSL is committed to create a united greek-life community through intentional EDI workshops and trainings.
- Community Service/Philanthropy
All social fraternities and sororities have their specific philanthropies, raising funds and awareness to specific causes. Community Service and philanthropies allows our fraternities and sororities to give back to their community by dedicating time, energy, and effort to make their community better.
The office of Fraternity and Sorority Life partners up with Community Action Volunteers in Education (CAVE) to further provide community service opportunities to our social fraternities and sororities. Greek-life at Chico State has been plagued with negative publicity and as an opportunity for programmatic growth FSL is committed to providing resources for our greeks to find educational and safe alternatives to build a better community for their members and greater Chico community.
- Leadership Development
Being involved in a social fraternity or sorority provides leadership development for our students which allows them to become the “Leaders of Tomorrow”. Each council and individual organization hosts retreats every summer and transition periods to develop the next student leaders and prepare them to be effective leaders.
The office of Fraternity and Sorority Life hosts monthly Presidents Meetings throughout the semester where student leaders participate in leadership development trainings, team building activities, identity development workshops, and educational resources that are tangible and transferable to their respective organizations.
- Safety and Community WellnessThe office of Fraternity and Sorority Life is committed to ensure the safety of our students. We cannot do this alone and so we have partnered up with key campus partners to provide resources and support to all our greek-affiliated students and potential new members. We know it is a long road ahead to change traditions, but FSL is committed to provide resources and support to all students. FSL will host its first ever National Hazing Prevention Week in the Fall 2024 that aligns with the national hazing prevention week efforts to raise awareness and provide tangible resources to all students involved in any student organization.
5 Star Program
The 5 Star Program serves as a metric system to measure individual chapter performance and intentional engagement with the 5 Pillars of Excellence that outline the values of Greek Life at Chico State.
All chapters across the three councils are subjected to upholding the 5 Pillars of Excellence throughout the year. The 5 Star Program allows the chapters to understand how successful their chapter is performing in comparison to other chapters in their respective councils and across all councils. There are specific requirements that each chapter MUST meet to be in Good Standing with Fraternity and Sorority Life. The 5 Star Program is a yearlong program (Fall – Spring) measuring the chapter’s performance, which also allows the chapters sufficient time to meet FSL’s expectations.
As the name suggests, chapters can be awarded up to 5 Stars (with 5 Stars being the MOST stars a chapter can earn) which will be shared with chapter leaders through a mid-year review and an end of the year review. At any time, chapters are encouraged to connect with the FSL Coordinators for updates on their Star Standing.
Chapters with 4 or 5 Stars will also provide chapters with privileges and rewards, including but not limited to:
- Freshman Rush Eligibility in the Fall semester (5 or 4 Star Chapters)
- Award and Recognition at the SLL Banquet (5 Star Chapters)
- Chapter Excellence Certificate (5 Star Chapters)
