The M.A. Interdisciplinary Studies in Mathematics Education will seek to achieve its 6 program goals through the following 7 student learning outcomes.

Goal #1: Deepen and broaden K-8 teachers' understanding of mathematical content

  • SLO 1: Program participants demonstrate a deep understanding of the content in state and national standards for elementary and middle school mathematics.
  • SLO 2: Program participants make connections among different areas in mathematics and effectively reason and communicate mathematical ideas.

Goal #2: Deepen and broaden K-8 teachers' understanding of issues in teaching and learning mathematics

  • SLO 3: Program participants have an understanding of how mathematical knowledge is acquired and are able to effectively analyze and respond to the mathematical thinking of K-8 students.
  • SLO 4: Program participants have an understanding of how issues of gender, economic & social class, cultural background, and politics influence the teaching and learning of mathematics.

Goal #3: Develop K-8 teachers' understanding of mathematics education research and its relationship to practice

  • SLO 5: Program participants have an appreciation for mathematics education research and research methodology and a deeper understanding of the research relevant to their practice.

Goal #4: Develop K-8 teachers' ability to effectively communicate issues in mathematics education

  • SLO 6: Program participants successfully complete a written thesis or project and effectively defend their work in a formal presentation.

Goal #5: Develop K-8 teachers' skills as teacher leaders in mathematics education

  • SLO 7: Program participants take an active role in peer-mentoring, presenting at conferences, organizing/leading professional development workshops, or contributing to program development and assessment at the district, county, or state level.
