BA in Music

Overview

The Department of Music and Theatre offers excellent curricular programs and opportunities for a variety of career objectives in music. Students take a core of classes intended to give them a basic understanding of music theory, history, ear training, keyboard proficiencies, and technologies. The degree options allow students to choose areas of specialization. Options include: General Music, Music Education, Recording Arts, Music Industry.

Mission

The mission of the BA in Music Program is to provide a high quality musical education and experience.

Goals & Objectives

  • Students will be able to demonstrate performance skills on their primary instrument/voice, as a soloist and/or as part of an ensemble.
  • Students will be able to discriminate, aurally identify, visually identify, and evaluate the structures of music.
  • Students will be able to apply knowledge of the historical foundations to the description, performance, and analysis of music from various stylistic periods.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge and comprehension of the role and value of music in human culture including the music of diverse cultures.

Common Learning Outcomes for MUTA

  • Students will be able to comprehend and appreciate aesthetic ideas and concepts within the theatrical or musical arts through practice, observation, and study.
  • Students will be able to articulate knowledge, theory and criticism of the musical or theatrical arts within a historical and cultural context through writing, oral presentation, and applied practice.
  • Students will be able to apply individual, collaborative and leadership skills through performance or studio production.
  • Students will have a working knowledge of current industry standards and practices respective to their discipline(s).

    General Music:

    • Students will be able to apply skills, techniques, and theories gained through studio instruction and ensembles in order to advance their personal and artistic development.
    Music Education:
    • Students will be able to apply skills, theories, and techniques gained through studio instruction and ensembles in order to advance their personal and artistic development.
    • Students will understand and apply pedagogical practices, industry best-practice and state-specific standards of music education.
    Theatre:
    • Students will demonstrate an understanding of vocational practices including professional rehearsal procedures, audition techniques, and portfolio demonstration.
    • Students will demonstrate an understanding of the collaborative process through active engagement in productions, to advance their personal and artistic development.
    Musical Theatre:
    • Students will demonstrate an understanding of vocational practices including professional rehearsal procedures, audition techniques, and portfolio demonstration.
    • Students will have a knowledge and comprehension of theatre design principles and other facets of technical theatre involved in the collaborative process. 
    Music Industry and Recording Arts:
    • Students will have a knowledge and comprehension of the science of sound and the technology used in modern music production.
