Overview

The Master of Arts in Art is an initial graduate degree in Art History, designed to prepare students for scholarly research. MA students focus on a broad knowledge of the history of art as well as a specific area. The Art department endeavors to create an environment that supports professional artistic activities and research.

Goals & Objectives

  • Students are familiar with roles, meanings, and historical development of the visual arts in diverse socio-cultural contexts and traditions.
  • Students are familiar with the theories and historiography of art history.
  • Students are able to conduct art historical research using a wide range of methods.
  • Students develop professional level competence in art historical writing and oral presentation.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrates preparedness for professional opportunities (e.g., museum work, teaching) and/or for entrance to doctoral programs at other institutions.
  2. Develops excellence in research methodologies and historiography of art History.
  3. Demonstrated ability to conduct independent and original research in the history of art.
  4. Demonstrates thorough knowledge of the concepts and histories of Western, Non-Western and Ethnic Art.
