Jeanne Lawrence

Research

Dr. Lawrence continues to be interested in the topics explored in her doctoral dissertation, “From High-Class Goods to Bargain Basements:  Department Stores, Urban Life and Labor in Chicago and Glasgow, 1890-1930.”  She teaches courses in U.S. history, women’s history, and the humanities.  Other teaching and research interests include architectural and art history, material culture, and the history of American and British landscapes and gardens.

Publications

Professor Lawrence has published articles in Urban History, Construction History, and Perspectives in Vernacular Architecture.  Her article on the construction of Selfridge’s Department Store in London was reprinted in the European Cities and Technology Reader (Routledge Press, 1999).  Her entry on the founder of the Eleanor Clubs, which provided housing for young working women in the early 20th century, is included in Women Building Chicago 1790-1990: A Biographical Dictionary. Her most recent book review appeared in The Winterthur Portfolio: A Journal of American Material Culture.
