The Clarence McIntosh-William Hutchinson Graduate Fellowship Award

Kyle Nakagawa won this prestigious award to assist in completing his M.A. thesis, which explores the early twentieth century legal and social histories of two important Asian immigrant communities in Yuba and Sutter counties—Japanese and Sikh immigrants.  The thesis focuses on how these immigrants grappled with racial prejudice and discrimination in California’s agricultural sector from 1900 to 1940, a period when state law barred them from owning farmland.  Based on Kyle’s research in government records and case files from Yuba and Sutter courts as well as special collections at Stanford University, Kyle’s thesis promises to make original contributions to the historical literature.
