Dr. Najm al-Din Yousefi recently appeared on “CORH Values,” the podcast produced by the CSU Chico Department of Comparative Religion and Humanities (CORH) and hosted by the CORH Department Chair, Dr. Daniel Veidlinger. In this podcast, Dr. Yousefi considers the complex situation in Afghanistan which has resulted in a failure of building an Afghan nation-state. In discussing modern Islamic ideologies, collectively referred to as Islamism, Dr. Yousefi draws attention to concrete historical and geopolitical factors that for the past few centuries have undermined efforts in defining an Afghan national identity. He argues that too much emphasis placed on religious differences has distorted our understanding of the unique situation in Afghanistan, thus contributing to a consistent failure of American foreign policy.
