University Honors Program

Application Information

Applications Closed for Fall 20
Due to high demand, we have closed applications to the Honors Program for Fall 20.

However, incoming students can still apply to the Honors Program before or during the fall semester.  Here's how:
  • All incoming students can apply to the Honors Program as continuing Chico State students, beginning in August.  The minimum requirements for continuing students to apply for the Honors Program in their first semester at Chico State is the same as for new students (3.5 high school GPA for first-time freshmen; 3.3 GPA for transfer students).
  • It is likely, however, that Honors classes for first-time freshmen will be at or near capacity for Fall 20.  Therefore, for students interested in applying to the Honors Program, we recommend that students take non-Honors courses in the following GE areas in their first semester (taking these courses will ensure that students are on track to complete the Honors Program in four years, even if students don't take an Honors course until their second semester):
    • A1 - Oral Communication
    • A4/B4 - Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning
    • B1 or B2 - Physical or Life Science
    • HIST 130, sec. 14 (reserved for History majors and Honors students - Area C credit for Honors)

Application

All students interested in applying must submit an online application, which will be available for continuing students (including first-semester students), in August.

As part of the online application, all applicants are required to submit a narrative essay with their application. The narrative must be no more than 500 words and address the following prompt:

  • The Honors Program in General Education seeks to serve highly motivated and resilient students.
  • What motivates you? Describe a time when your motivation helped you overcome adversity or accomplish something you are very proud of.

First-Semester Student Admission Requirements

To apply to the Honors Program before your first semester, you should

  1. have been admitted to Chico State; and
  2. have a High School GPA of 3.5 or above

Students with less than a 3.5 GPA can still apply and provide an explanation for the lower GPA on the application.

Transfer, Re-entry, and Current Chico State Student Admission Requirements

To apply to the Honors Program as a transfer student, re-entry student, or current Chico State student, you should

  1. be enrolled at Chico State or have been admitted to Chico State; and
  2. have a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or above

Students with less than a 3.3 GPA can still apply and provide an explanation for the lower GPA on the application.

Transfer, re-entry and current students interested in Honors in GE should meet with an Honors advisor to discuss their Honors course requirements. In most cases, the number of units required will be reduced because of previously completed coursework.
