What Is COCO 

COCO stands for Community Council, a student organization in each residential community that serves and represents the residents. The Council plans events, host service and advocacy events, works to improve the community, and represents the residents in the Residence Hall Association.

Each COCO is advised by the Residence Life Coordinator (RLC) for their residential community.

Why Join COCO

As a member of COCO, you will learn new skills, including event planning, budgeting, leadership, and public speaking. You will also be a part of a community of student leaders on campus, and make friendships that will last a lifetime.

COCO Community Improvements

COCO is responsible for community improvements within our residence halls. These include but are not limited to: new community TVs, BBQs, pool and ping pong equipment, whiteboards, water bottle fill stations, volleyball nets, lawn games, gaming systems, and much more.

COCO Positions

COCO Executive Board consist of four positions: President, Vice President of Administration, Vice President of Team Development, and Vice President of Public Relations. In addition to the four Executive Board positions COCO is made up of Community Representatives. These Representatives bring ideas and feedback from their floor, wing, house, building to COCO.

  • President

    The President of Community Council (COCO) serves as the voice of the Residence Hall Association by serving on committees throughout campus life and working with campus partners. This position presides over the Community Council Meetings, Executive and General Boards meetings.

    Community Council Duties:

    • Preside over COCO meetings.
    • Delegate tasks to COCO members.
    • Support the recruitment of COCO members.
    • Assist in the facilitation of Leadership Training and Retreats.
    • Support COCO community improvement project and programs.
    • Within COCO meetings only vote if there is a tie.
    • Meet weekly with COCO Advisor.
    • Attend the Residence Hall Association General Board Meeting Monthly as needed.
    • Attend Food Service Meetings with the Vice President of Administration.

  • Vice President of Administration

    • Attend all Community Council Meetings.
    • Attend all activities sponsored by Community Council and RHA.
    • Develop goals for and with Community Council.
    • Work with RLC on monthly fiscal report and managing the budget.
    • Take minutes for all Community Council Meetings.
    • Distribute minutes for posting within 48 hours after each weekly meeting
    • Maintain records of Community Council, including but not limited to: rosters, copies of minutes, and activities sponsored by Community Council.
    • Take attendance at each Community Council meeting.
    • Facilitate meetings in President’s absence
    • Assist the President with goal development
    • Attend Food Service Meetings with COCO President.
    • Meet as needed with the RLC.

  • Vice President of Team Development
    • Attend all Community Council Meetings
    • Attend all activities sponsored by Community Council.
    • Develop goals for and with Community Council.
    • Facilitate Ice Breakers, Energizers, and Getting to Know you Activities at each Community Council Meeting.
    • Facilitate 1-2 professional development activities per month with your Community Council.
    • Facilitate 1-2 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion learning opportunities per month with your Community Council.
    • Promote Campus Sponsored Multicultural, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) events.
    • Work with RLC to educate Community Council members on different aspects of DEI. Which can include current/past world events, identifies, bias training, etc.
    • Assist the Vice President of Public Relations with new member recruitment.

  • Vice President of Public Relations
    • Attend all Community Council Meetings
    • Attend all activities sponsored by Community Council.
    • Develop goals for and with Community Council.
    • Advertise meetings and events sponsored by Community Council.
    • Design and create logo for Community Council.
    • Maintain Community Council Social Media presence.
    • Create awareness to residents of events and opportunities in Community Council.
    • With the help of Community Council members create physical and digital advertisements for Community Council events and community improvements.
    • Survey community residents on the community environment including what events they would like to attend, community improvements they would like to see, and feedback on Dining Services.
    • Attend Food Service Meetings in place of the Vice President of Administration when needed.
    • Meet as needed with the RLC.

  • Community Representative
    • Attend all Community Council Meetings
    • Attend all activities sponsored by Community Council.
    • Be the spokesperson for your wing/floor/building/house/community.
    • Know the needs and concerns of the residents in your area.
    • Communicate with residents so they know what events or community improvements Community Council is sponsoring.
    • Encourage your communities’ residents to participate in activities and get involved in Community Council.

  • Community Council Recruitment and Selection Process

    Community Council recruitment begins with the opening of the COCO Application in early August prior to Move In. The COCO Application will be open Monday, August 16th until Monday, September 6th.

    No prior leadership experience is required to join COCO!

    All applicants will be scheduled for a casual, quick interview with our Community Council Advisors. Within this interview each applicant will be able to express their desire and qualifications for servicing on Community Council. Applicants applying for the COCO President (RHA Officer) position should expect a slightly longer interview where they are able to expand upon their experiences, leadership style, and goals for the position.

    Interviews will be conducted between August 31st and September 10th.

    All Applicants will be offered a position within Community Council.

    Our first COCO meetings will be held on the week of September 21st leading up to our Leadership Summit on Saturday, September 25th. Leadership Summit is an opportunity for COCO members to get to know their fellow COCO members, learn about their leadership style, and learn more about their position on COCO.
