Conditional Undergraduate Applicant

Why is conditional admission a great option for you?

1)   No English language proficiency is required.  That means, no TOEFL or IELTS score is needed for you to attend.  We will accept completion of our English language institute as a substitute for a TOEFL or IELTS score.

2)   You can begin your studies in the U.S. now!  Don’t wait until you receive a high enough TOEFL or IELTS score.  Conditional admission allows you to begin your program at our on-campus intensive language school, the  American Language & Culture Immersion (ALCI).  Once you complete ALCI, you can transition directly into your academic program.  This option allows you to benefit from full language and cultural immersion.  Studies show language proficiency increases much more rapidly with full language and cultural immersion!

Applying for Conditional Admission is Easy!  Here's How...

Step 1 - Determine if you are academically eligible for admission.

Check the academic qualifications needed for your student type.

Step 2 - Complete the CSU, Chico and ALCI applications and submit required document.

A. Apply to CSU Chico online through CalState Apply

Note: The CalStateApply online application is a new system and under revision.  If you have any difficulty completing the online application, please submit the  paper application (PDF).  When submitting a paper application, the $70 fee may be paid at

B. Apply to ALCI 

  • Complete and print the  ALCI Application Form (PDF)
  • Pay the $100 (non-refundable) application fee. Instructions found in the application form.

C. Email supporting documentation to

  • Copy of passport bio data page or photo identification 
  • Financial Support Documents
  • Transfer students only: copy of visa and current I-20
  • Unofficial transcripts (in order for us to make an expedited admission decision)

Step 3: Send official transcripts to complete your admission file   

To be considered official, a transcript must be in a sealed envelope and be one of the following:

  • Issued directly from the high school, college or university
  • A certified copy issued by a government office (example: Kuwait Cultural Office)
  • A certified copy from an official translation service

Final Official Transcript Submission Deadlines:

  • Fall: August 1
  • Spring: January 15

Step 4: Admission Decision

Once your application and all required supporting documents have been submitted, it will take approximately two weeks for International Education and Global Engagement to evaluate your file and notify you regarding your admission.  For conditional admission applicants, Chico State will issue a letter of conditional admission and the English language institution which you will attend will issue your immigration document (SEVIS I-20 form).

Admission Denials – Appeal Process

If you feel there is new, serious, and compelling information that might affect our decision, you may submit an appeal. You have  15 business days from the date you receive your denial letter in the mail to submit a hard copy letter of appeal to the Appeal Committee.

The committee must see a demonstrated need to repeal the denial decision based on the new information being submitted. Your appeal letter should be submitted to International Education and Global Engagement at  You are entitled to one appeal per academic term.
