The primary immigration document for F-1 students is an I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status). This is required to apply for your U.S. nonimmigrant visa.
How to obtain your I-20
Important Note - You may have already completed this step when you applied to Chico State. Please do not upload the same document multiple times.
Three documents are required for I-20 issuance:
- Financial Support Form (PDF) - identifies your financial guarantor
- Guarantor's Current Bank Statement(less than six months old) - verifies funding available to pay educational costs
- Valid Passport - photocopy of the bio page

Wait Time to Receive Your I-20
Your I-20 document will be created after you are officially admitted to Chico State.
Students Currently Residing Outside of the U.S.
After you are admitted, and all of your required documents are uploaded (see list above), it takes between 5-10 business days to receive your I-20.
Students Transferring From a U.S. College or University
You will work with the DSO at your current college/university to select a date to release your I-20 to Chico State. After this action, your Chico State DSO will create a new I-20 for you. This will occur after you complete your last semester at your current college/university.
Note - The University is closed on Saturdays and Sundays during the academic year and also on Fridays in the summer months. For a list of University holiday closures, please visit our academic calendar.
