Free Software and Internet Connectivity Resources

Chico State students have free access to professional software suites. Additionally, many Internet connectivity resources are available to students in need.

Adobe Creative Cloud is a group of applications used for design, productivity, and development. Adobe CC is available on Windows and Mac desktops, as well as some mobile devices.

Blackboard ALLY, Kurzweil 3000, and Otter.ai

Blackboard Ally for Students is first-of-its-kind software that allows you to absorb information however you feel is best. It is available in all of your Blackboard courses and will give you the option to download a document in any of the following formats: tagged PDF, HTML, Electronic Braille, audio (mp3), or a translated version.

Kurzweil 3000 is an inclusive technology, text-to-speech, learning tool that supports the concept of Universal Design for Learning with a collection of powerful reading, writing, test-taking, and study skill tools that makes content accessible and efficient to all students, staff, and faculty.

Otter.ai is a free web application and mobile application that converts live speaking into a written transcription. You can get real-time streaming transcripts and, within minutes, rich, searchable notes with text, audio, images, speaker ID, and key phrases.

Internet Connectivity Resources

The following resources are available for free or low-cost Internet access:

  • Eduroam: You can access hundreds of free, secure Wi-Fi hotspots across the country with your existing Eduroam setup. View a map of hotspots. Get connected to Eduroam.
  • Internet For All: Several Internet service providers offer low-cost, affordable home Internet for qualifying households (which includes many college students) as part of the California Emerging Technology FundFind which low-cost Internet and computer offers are available in your area by entering your zip code at EveryoneOn.org/cetf(opens in new window)
  • Special Offers: During COVID-19, several companies, including AT&T, Charter/Spectrum, Comcast, Cox, Frontier, T-Mobile, and other ISPs, have special offers and policies on service termination, late fees, and data cap waivers. The California Department of Education maintains a list on their Getting Internet Access website.
