Romelo Thornton

Outstanding Graduating Student Award
Richard Merritt Duncan Advocacy Award
My name is Romelo Thornton and I am an MCGS and Sociology double major from Moreno Valley, California. I grew up in a mixed race Buddhist household where the emphasis was put on family, being a good person and having a positive mindset to overcome anything you encounter in life. Although I had these strong foundations, they didn’t keep me from experiencing bullies, harassment and feelings of insufficiency. Becoming an MCGS and Sociology double major was one of the smartest things I have ever done in my life. It opened the door for me becoming a more vocal activist, a better friend and a better son and brother. It has also given me the opportunity to meet so many amazing people while studying at Chico State, I know that I have made friends for life and I can count on them when I really need to. I am beyond grateful to have been chosen for this award, for having this experience and for having all the support I do now. It has truly come full circle for me with this award and it is validation that I am no longer that insecure, quiet person who shied away from speaking out. MCGS and Sociology have both given me a voice and power I didn’t know I had within me and for that I am eternally grateful.
