Marie Downing

Marie Ramirez Downing teaches Acting; Politics, Performance, and Power; and Performance of Identity at Chico State. She has been Guest and Visiting Faculty of Voice and Speech at U.C. Berkeley, Santa Clara University, and Texas Tech University. She is a member of the Voice and Speech Trainers Association, The National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures and The Association for Theatre in Higher Education. Marie has been a course coordinator for CSU Summer Arts and presented a course in 2019 entitled “Theatre and Social Change: Politics, Performance and Vocal Power.” Research interests and Conference workshops she has presented are  “Bridging the Internal Athleticism of the Voice with the External Athleticism of Running” (VASTA Seattle),  “From Joan of Arc to the Women’s March: Developing Vocal and Physical Authority” (ATHE Boston), “Performance of Identity: How much labor does it take to be you?” (ATHE Chicago) and “My Spanglish Homelife, Finding my Voice” (VASTA Chicago).  Marie has an M.F.A. in Acting from The Theatre School at DePaul University, and a B.A. in Theatre Arts- Acting from California State University, Fresno and is Designated Linklater Voice Teacher via the Linklater Center of Voice and Language in New York City.
