Option in Music Education

If you are considering a career as a music educator, consider the Music Education program at Chico State. We prepare students to meet the challenges of teaching through a combination of courses and field experiences.
Graduates leave our program with the preparation needed to enter the Credential Program as well as the skills and knowledge needed to be successful in the K-12 music classroom.
Our music education faculty has a wealth of experience working in various school settings, and they are all active in state and national education organizations. Our award-winning student chapter of the Music Educators National Association will give you the opportunity to expand your school experiences beyond the University through attendance at conventions and in-service projects.
This is an outstanding program. We welcome anyone who is interested in the music education profession.
Experiences offered at CSU Chico include:
  • Participation in top ensembles and studio instruction tab

Top ensembles are not limited to “performance” students. Music education students have the equal opportunity to participate in top ensembles on both their primary and secondary instruments, or voice. Ensemble experiences include Bands, Choirs, Orchestra, Jazz Bands, and multiple small ensembles. Additionally, music education students receive private studio instruction on their primary instrument, or voice.

  • Instruct and Conduct Peers tab

Music education courses provide the opportunity to learn teaching and conducting skills through hands-on practical experiences. You will learn how to plan, organize and implement successful school music programs. You will learn basic pedagogical techniques for teaching children in the Kodàly, Orff, and Dalcroze approaches, and you will learn the skills needed to run an instrumental, choral, and/or Jazz program.

  • Hands-on experience with local schools tab

We offer hands-on learning through a relationship with the public schools. This means that as future teachers you have the opportunity (BEFORE student teaching) to teach children and youth in a guided atmosphere.

  • Participation in National organizations tab

Active student chapters of NAfME (National Association for Music Educators), NBA (National Band Association), and ACDA (American Choral Directors Association) are available for membership.

  • Learn from Experienced Professors tab

Our professors have work experience in the public school systems and some still work in the field providing courses and practical guidance that helps shape our young students into the professional educators they will become.

Why Music Education?

If you like children/youth and you like making music, then a career in music education may be for you. This program offers you the opportunity to learn skills that will allow you to improve as both a musician and educator.
