New and Transfer Music Student Scholarship Information

  • Applicants must be full-time students (12 units minimum) and maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA (a higher GPA is required for some scholarships)
  • Scholarship recipients must be significantly involved in departmental productions during both semesters of the academic year for which they receive the award and are asked to sign an acceptance letter agreeing to this requirement.
  • Awards are paid 50 percent at the beginning of each semester if the award is over $600. If under $600, the award will be paid 100 percent for the fall semester.
  • Award announcements are posted to the student's portal account between July and August of the academic year they will be issued.
  • All scholarships are contingent upon successful acceptance to university.

  • University Scholarship Application is due. In-coming and transfer students are not required to apply but are highly encouraged. It is recommended that each student submits a letter of recommendation with their University Scholarship application in addition to completing an audition/interview/portfolio. By doing so, it opens up other university scholarship opportunities other than what the department has to offer.

NOTE: Applications will not be accepted after this date. Students submitting late applications will not be considered for university scholarships and will not be able to audition or interview for a department scholarship.

  • Students interested in a Music Industry or Recording Arts scholarship do not need to audition. Music Industry or Recording Arts scholarships are based on interviews only. Interview times will be assigned via email. Please check your email.

New and transfer students have 2 ways to audition or interview for a scholarship:

Audition

  • To arrange for an audition, please complete the MUTA Audition/Interview Request & Submission Form provided below. You will be contacted via email with your audition details.
  • Students must submit the MUTA Scholarship Application for their audition to be accepted.
  • Auditions are required for the instrumental and vocal scholarships only.
    • Recording Arts and Music Industry Students will interview for their scholarship but are welcome to audition if they are also interested in a instrumental or vocal scholarship.

Audition

The Department of Music and Theatre reserves the right not to accept submitted material or to ask for new submissions or a live audition.
  • To submit your video or recorded audio audition, you must complete the MUTA Audition/Interview Request & Submission Form provided below.
  • Video or audio submission must be of high video and audio quality. Videos should be recorded with a devise designed for high quality recording. Please use a tripod for the duration of recording.
  • Record the video in an appropriate room or space with the best lighting and sound quality (no background noise or pre-recorded performances).
  • Set the camera to show hand and body positions, using the closest camera distance to also include as much of the entire body as possible.
  • Accompaniment (i.e. piano, “Smart Music,” “Jamey Aebersold”) is highly recommended. If using live accompaniment, the accompanist should be viewable during the recording.
  • Video must be current (no more than 6 months old).
  • Video duration should be no more than 10-15 minutes.
  • Performance selection should showcase musical and technical abilities. See the Audition/Interview Requirements for suggested audition material.
  • Dress for the video audition as if it were a live audition.
  • Announce each selection or scale clearly, facing the camera. Give title and composer of material before playing/singing.
  • Upload video to YouTube or another public video streaming sight (websites requiring passwords to view videos will not be accepted).
    • Videos must be submitted for full scholarship consideration and you must have completed the MUTA Audition/Interview Request & Submission Form provided below to accompany your video.
  • Remember to back up the recording for archival purposes.

Recorded Audio Audition

The Department of Music and Theatre reserves the right not to accept submitted material or to ask for new submissions or a live audition.

  • Audio recordings must be recorded on a compact disk. Audio-recorded auditions need to be accompanied with a letter of authenticity by band/choir director or private instructor (letter must be on letterhead and include contact information).
  • Accompaniment (i.e. piano, “Smart Music,” “Jamey Aebersold”) is highly recommended.
  • Recording must be current (no more than 6 months old).
  • Recording duration should be no more than 10-15 minutes.
  • Performance selection should showcase musical and technical abilities. See the Audition/Interview Requirements for suggested audition material.
  • Announce each selection or scale clearly, giving title and composer before playing/singing.
  • Remember to back up recordings for archival purposes.
  • Audio recordings must be received by the Music Department for full scholarship consideration. Be sure to label your CD with your name and instrument.
  • Be sure to complete the MUTA Audition/Interview Request & Submission Form provided below when you mail your audition. Auditions can be mailed to:

Interviews - Music Industry and Recording Arts

If you would like to interview for a Music Industry and/or Recording Arts scholarship, you have a few options:

You will need to...

  • Students should be prepared to answer a variety of questions relating to their experiences, both academic and work related, and discuss future goals.
Students interviewing do not need to submit an audition unless you are interested in an instrumental or vocal scholarship. Interview times will be assigned via email. Please check your email.
