Ability First Campers Learn from World-Class Paralympic Athletes

Thirty-five youth from all over California, as well as Oregon, Nevada and Washington, are attending the Ability First Sports Camp this week at California State University, Chico. The camp, a one-week residential camp for youth with physical disabilities, emphasizes both sport skill development and socialization.

Students from Northwestern Lehigh High School in New Tripoli, Pa., took top honors in a national business contest in New York City May 25, impressing the judges with their new parfait and lollipop business. But judges were equally impressed with their global outreach projects in Peru and Nicaragua.

California State University, Chico’s 117th Commencement will feature two commencement ceremonies for the class of 2007, one on Saturday, May 19, and one on Sunday, May 20. In addition, several colleges and programs will hold receptions and special ceremonies.

Sociology Students Throw Party to Celebrate the Lives of Seniors

Students in Professor Cynthia Siemsen’s Sociology of the Life course at California State University, Chico are giving a party for some of Chico’s senior citizens whom they have gotten to know during this semester. On Tuesday, May 15, from noon until 2 p.m. in BMU 210, students who have taken the oral histories of 18 people will present their stories to them.
“Watershed,” California State University, Chico’s literary magazine, is celebrating 30 years of continuous publication with a special reading of past and current contributors published in the anniversary double issue this spring. The reading will take place on Thursday, May 10, 7:30 p.m. in room 210 of the Bell Memorial Union. A reception will follow.
Chico Students Win First Place in Advertising Competition

Five marketing students came home from a regional competition in Fresno this past weekend singing “We Are the Champions” and carrying a 40-inch trophy they received for placing first with their Coca-Cola advertising campaign. The American Advertising Federation National Student Advertising Competition (AAFNSAC) sponsored the regional contest.

California High School Students Compete in Commercial and Social Entrepreneurship Tournament

Eight regional champion teams from high schools across California will travel to Los Angeles on April 28 to compete in a contest based on entrepreneurship and community service. Teams from Santa Monica High School, Santa Barbara High School, Golden West High School in Visalia, Highlands High School near Sacramento, Oakland Tech, Castlemont High School in Oakland, Benicia High School and South Pasadena High School will be competing.

The faculty-in-residence is Andrew Flescher, professor of religious studies. Flescher has traveled extensively in Brazil and spent a summer studying wildlife in the Amazon River Basin.

California State University, Chico has been awarded the grand prize in the National Wildlife Federation’s Campus Ecology Chill Out contest. The competition recognizes colleges and universities around the country which are implementing innovative programs to reduce global warming pollution, the biggest environmental threat facing the nation. CSU, Chico was selected as the grand prize winner from over 100 competition entries received from colleges nationwide.

Chico State Is Top Fundraiser in the Country for Up ’til Dawn Event

The Up ’til Dawn event at California State University, Chico has moved from "star of the week" to just "star" for its fundraising efforts on behalf of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis. With a final tally of $186,000 raised by students through the Nov. 7, 2006 event, the Chico project became the highest money-raising project ever, with the highest number of participants writing the highest number of letters.

Silverman’s visit is sponsored by the Department of Kinesiology. His talk is free and open to the public.

University’s Early Assessment Program Gearing Up for North State’s STAR Testing

For local high schools, spring brings STAR (Standardized Reporting and Testing). One program at California State University, Chico is especially concerned with students’ testing participation. The Early Assessment Program (EAP), a collaborative effort among the State Board of Education, the California Department of Education and the California State University (CSU), was established to provide opportunities for students to measure their readiness for college-level English and mathematics in their junior year of high school by adding an augmented portion to the STAR test.
