The third Chico on $10 a Day event will be held on Saturday, May 9, from 1 to 3 p.m., in Selvester’s event room on the California State University, Chico campus. The public is invited to taste delicious dishes using local ingredients purchased at the local farmers’ market.

Students from the Department of Nutrition and Food Sciences (NFSC) will provide information and free breakfast and lunch samples to show you how you can eat locally on $10 a day.

This sustainability event is a part of the NFSC food service production course. Students will use sustainable practices in all stages of the project, including growing fresh herbs to use in the food preparation. They will walk to and from the local Saturday farmers’ market, use canvas bags for shopping, prepare all food, compost scraps, use standard recipes and budget three meals for $10. They will even decorate with recyclables.

The breakfast and lunch meals include dishes such as chai tea oatmeal with a homemade granola crunch topping, roasted vegetable omelet, farmers’ market panini, strawberry citrus punch, and wild and brown rice salad with mixed vegetables and toasted almonds.

In addition, there will be displays on how to grow a small garden, compost in the home and in foodservice, keep utility bills low, maintain food safety, make homemade baby food, and reuse, recycle and repair. The event is free and open to the public. Samples and recipes will be provided.
