Chemistry can be colorful, exciting and fun! That’s the promise for visitors to a show next Tuesday evening, Oct. 19, hosted by Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society, California State University, Chico, in celebration of National Chemistry week.

Chemists Marvin Lang and Donald Showalter (also known as Dr. Wow), professors emeriti from the University of Wisconsin¬–Stevens Point, will perform chemical demonstrations at 7 p.m. in Holt 170. The performance is free and open to the public. It is especially aimed at junior high and high school teachers and their students, but budding scientists of any age and stage are welcome.

Showalter was the series demonstrator for “The World of Chemistry,” a television series on introductory chemistry hosted by Nobel prize-winning chemist Roald Hoffman. The series aired on PBS in 1990 and is still used in high school chemistry courses.

Showalter and Lang have presented more than five hundred chemical demonstration programs intended to excite and educate students, teachers and the general public about the wonders of chemistry. Programs have been presented at Epcot theme park, Disneyland, the U.S. Congress, the Smithsonian Museum of American History, the Great Lake Science Museum in Cleveland, Oxford University in England and Helsinki University in Finland. Television appearances include “The Ira Joe Fisher Show” in Cincinnati and “Newton’s Apple” in Minneapolis.
