The MESA Schools Program (MSP) at California State University, Chico is part of a statewide program that was named in Bayer Corporation’s “Compendium of Best Practice K-12 STEM Education Programs.”

The local program prepares Chico area K-12 girls and minorities to excel in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) studies. The compendium highlights programs that effectively educate girls and minority students in STEM fields.

“We are delighted and honored with this recognition,” said Teresita Curiel, director of MSP. “Thanks to the sustained and dedicated work with partner schools and teachers in Butte, Colusa, Glenn, Sutter and Yuba Counties, CSU, Chico MESA has been successful in both fostering academic success and creating unique opportunities for young students to explore the exciting possibilities in their futures. Over the course of our presence in the North Valley, MESA has served thousands of young students, and we look forward to continuing to deliver an effective service model that develops student talent and achievement in STEM areas.”

For 20 years, Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement (MESA) has served middle and high school students in CSU, Chico’s service area. MSP assists students in increasing their educational performance and becoming better prepared for a college and university education. MSP helps students expand their math and science knowledge and learn more about career opportunities in related fields.

MESA is a statewide academic preparation program that serves more than 20,000 K-12, community college and four-year college students each year who are educationally disadvantaged. MESA’s goal is to get these students interested in math, science and engineering and prepare them academically so they graduate with degrees in those fields. Sixty percent of MESA students select math, science or engineering as a college major.
