California State University, Chico students will participate in the 10th annual Up ’til Dawn St. Jude fundraiser Monday night, Nov. 8, in an attempt to win their fifth straight national championship for the event.

More than 3,000 students are expected to fill Acker Gym between 3 p.m. and midnight in the letter-writing campaign that looks to beat last year’s fundraising total of $159,000.

At the student-lead event, participants address envelopes containing letters soliciting donations for the Memphis, Tenn.-based St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The luau-themed event will feature music, dancing, raffles and free food and drink.

“Everyone is there for the right reasons. There is no better time to have a good time in Chico than Up ’til Dawn,” said student Co-Director Tony Goerlick.

CSU, Chico, the fastest school in the nation to raise over $1 million dollars for St. Jude, hopes to raise more than $250,000 this year alone.

As an added incentive to bring the most addresses possible, students who fill out 50 or more envelopes are entered into a drawing for a semester’s tuition and an iPad. Students who bring 30 or more addresses have a chance to win a trip to Hawaii and a laptop computer.

Representatives from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will be at the event, as well as a former patient who will talk about his experience.

Larry Bassow, Up ’til Dawn adviser, said that sponsors R. W. Knudsen, NSSI, PrintMojo and Woodstock’s Pizza will be recognized Monday for their great support for the event over the years.

Up ’til Dawn is sponsored by St. Jude at over 180 campuses and universities nationwide. The event is lead and run entirely by student volunteers.
