The documentary film "El Clásico: More Than a Game," produced entirely by CSU, Chico students, will premiere at the El Rey Theater on Friday, Oct. 14 at 8 p.m. (Doors open and tickets will be on sale beginning at 7 p.m.) The film was shot on location in Barcelona and Madrid, Spain, and explores Spanish history, culture and regional identity through the intense and world-renowned soccer rivalry between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.

The students and professors are thrilled to premiere this exciting project to the community, said Matt Robertson, a graduate student in history and one of the nine students who filmed in Spain in the spring of 2010. The film focuses on the intense rivalry centered on futbol, known in the United States as soccer, between Real Madrid and Futbol Club (FC) Barcelona, two of the top futbol teams in the world. As Robertson, described it, in Spain “futbol is a dimension of politics … just wearing a jersey is making a political statement.”

A team of students has been editing the hundreds of hours of footage they took in Spain and have now completed a theater-ready version.

Ticket prices are $5 for the general public and $2 for students with an ID card. For more information please contact Robertson by e-mail at elclasico.morethanagame@gmail.com or by phone at 530-228-7232.

CSU, Chico, the Department of Communication Design at CSU, Chico, Bella's Sports Pub, Tres Hombres, The Banshee, the Spanish Ministry of Culture, Tri Counties Bank and the Chico News and Review are sponsoring the premiere.
