Sophomore Michael Barrett of Escalon, president of California State University, Chico’s Residence Hall Association, has been elected as director of the Pacific Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls (PACURH).

The Pacific Region includes Alaska, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Australia.

PACURH is one of eight regional associations that comprise the National Association of College and University Residence Halls, which is one of the largest student-run associations in the world with 400 colleges and universities from the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia and Qatar.

The residence hall organizations promote living on campus as an integral part of the college experience, and strive to provide resources to help member schools with student leadership development, educational programs and financial support.

Barrett is majoring in political science and hopes to attend law school following graduation from CSU, Chico.

As PACURH director, Barrett will also serve on the national residence hall association’s board of directors.

In related news, David Stephen, director of University Housing and Food Service, said CSU, Chico’s Residence Hall Association has been selected to host the 2012 “No Frills Conference” for the PACURH Region next February. Student leaders from PACURH member schools will gather on the CSU, Chico campus to conduct the business of the regional association.

Both Michael Barrett’s election and the hosting of the conference are big events for CSU, Chico’s housing program, said Stephen. “Michael is an exceptional student leader with unlimited potential and promise, and Chico State and University Housing and Food Service will be showcased when PACURH student leaders gather here early next year for their conference.”
