Renee Renner and Jennifer Spangler have been appointed as new directors of the Gateway Science Museum. Spangler is business and finance director, and Renner is director of exhibits and education. They began their new positions July 1.

Renner is a professor in California State University, Chico’s Department of Computer Science. She earned her PhD in computer science from Florida State University and came to CSU, Chico in 1998. In 2006, she co-founded the Institute for Research in Intelligent Systems.

Spangler has 12 years’ experience as a consultant to museums and arts organizations and has taught in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts. She earned her BS in organizational administration with a minor in museum studies from Miami University of Ohio and also has an MA in art history from UC Davis.

“I’m really excited about this opportunity we have to get to work with different constituents and a strong, passionate advisory board,” said Renner. Added Spangler: “Museums are essential for a healthy community, and I’m looking forward to how we can further establish Chico as a cultural center.”

“Both of these individuals are passionate and excited about working at the Gateway Science Museum and will provide the strong leadership needed as we move into the future,” said Fraka Harmsen, dean of the College of Natural Sciences.

The Gateway Science Museum is located at 625 Esplanade in Chico. The museum is currently closed until Sept. 28 but will reopen Sept. 29 with new exhibits. For more information, call 530-898-4121 or e-mail gateway@csuchico.edu.
