Robert Knight, associate vice chancellor for undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, has been named dean of California State University, Chico’s College of Humanities and Fine Arts.

Knight will start in his new position on Aug. 1. He will replace Joel Zimbelman, who served as interim dean for two years prior to being named dean in 2009.

In his current position and as interim dean of undergraduate studies at University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Knight worked extensively on general education reform, globalization and internationalization initiatives and interdisciplinary curricular development. “His experience in interdisciplinary programs will help enrich our innovative curricular offerings not only within the College of Humanities and Fine Arts but also across the University,” said CSU, Chico Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Belle Wei.

Prior to those administrative positions, Knight was chair of the Department of Music and Theatre Arts from 2005 to 2011. He has been a faculty member at University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire since 1988.

Knight received his doctoral degree in voice performance from Northwestern University. He earned his master’s in music theory from Indiana University and did his undergraduate work in music education at Illinois State University.

“I look forward to joining the California State University, Chico campus community and working with the excellent faculty and staff of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts on our mutual goal of student success,” Knight said. “It is a wonderful opportunity, and it will be great to get to know the University and community.”

The College of Humanities and Fine Arts includes the Departments of Art and Art History, English, History, International Languages, Literature and Cultures, Music and Theatre, Philosophy, and Comparative Religion and Humanities.
