California State University, Chico international education advisor James Luyirika-Sewagudde Jr. has been named the recipient of the 2013 KC ISSS Award of Excellence, a top award in the field of international student and scholar services.

The Knowledge Community for International Student and Scholar Services (KC ISSS) provides professional development opportunities and resources for those in the field of international student and scholar services. The group is a subset of NAFSA: Association of International Educators, a national nonprofit professional organization dedicated to international education.

Each year, the KC ISSS award honors a NAFSA member who has demonstrated compassion, integrity and leadership in the field of international student and scholar services, and has worked in the field for at least 10 years.

Luyirika-Sewagudde has served in a student affairs capacity at CSU, Chico since 1973. As the University’s Responsible Officer and its Principal Designated Official, he is an official representative to the U.S government and can issue student visas. He ensures international students’ compliance with U.S. immigration regulations and federal program requirements. He also serves as CSU, Chico’s National Student Exchange (NSE) program coordinator, responsible for study exchanges between 200 colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.

At a ceremony in April, Luyirika-Sewagudde was recognized for 40 years of service to CSU, Chico. In 2011, he was named the University’s Outstanding Staff Employee of the Year, and he received the NSE’s Exemplary Service Award that same year. Born in Uganda, Luyirika-Sewagudde has studied in Costa Rica and spent time as a Fulbright Scholar in South Africa.

“Aside from being overwhelmed that I would be selected from thousands of international student and scholar advisors in the U.S. and elsewhere, a daunting realization, I am encouraged to continue what I do which, ultimately, is an attempt to promote and realize intercultural/interpersonal appreciation and understanding,” he said.

Luyirika-Sewagudde accepted the 2013 KC ISSS award during a ceremony at the NAFSA annual conference in St. Louis on May 28.
