California State University, Chico’s social Greek organizations set records during Greek Week this fall for philanthropic contributions.

Nineteen CSU, Chico fraternities and sororities and approximately 1,200 students took part in multiple events from Oct. 13 to Oct. 19.

During a blood drive Oct. 13-14, chapters registered 788 donors and donated 640 pints of blood, 108 more pints than during last year’s blood drive during Greek Week. Malcolm McLemore, fraternity and sorority affairs program coordinator, said this was the third straight record-breaking blood drive for Greek organizations.

Fraternity and sorority teams raised $8,797 towards breast cancer research during the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk Oct. 18, tripling donation totals from last year. McLemore said it was the largest group donation for the event in Chico.

Greek chapters donated more than 1,000 cans of food to the Jesus Center through an event called “Can”struction, where fraternities and sororities built designs based on donated cans.

The Greek chapters raised $1,500 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, as part of CSU, Chico’s annual Up ’til Dawn fundraiser.

In addition, the Greek Week Executive Board is donating $1,400 – half the proceeds collected from a Greek talent show – towards the Northern Valley Catholic Social Services Boles Fire support effort, to help people affected by the devastating fire in Weed in September.

“It goes without saying that we are immensely proud of the contributions that members of our Greek community have made toward our greater community,” said McLemore. “We would like to thank all of those who continually support our students and the work that they do. We are looking forward to setting the expectation even higher for next year!”

Fraternity and sorority members make up approximately 10 percent of the student population at CSU, Chico. Greek life membership provides students with opportunities including leadership development, scholarships, philanthropic endeavors and community involvement.
