Educators throughout California are invited to join faculty, staff and students at California State University, Chico for the 20th annual Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) Conference Oct. 1-3 on the CSU, Chico campus.

The 2014 conference theme, “High Impact Practices: Engaging the Whole Student,” features sessions that address student engagement, successful pedagogies, critical inquiry, intensive writing, collaborative and service-based learning, investigative research and more.

The three-day academic conference is presented by CELT, the campus Faculty Recognition and Support Committee, the Office of Faculty Affairs and the Office of the Provost.

The event kicks off with the annual faculty awards luncheon and keynote address on Wednesday, Oct. 1 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Bell Memorial Union auditorium.

The luncheon will honor the campus’ 2013-14 Outstanding Teacher, communication design professor John Roussell, and 2013-14 Outstanding Academic Advisor, philosophy professor Zanja Yudell, along with recipients of this year’s Excellence in Online Instruction Awards.

Keynoting the conference is Indiana University’s Center for Postsecondary Research associate director Jillian Kinzie. A senior scholar at the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment, Kinzie will present, “The Promise of High-Impact Practices: Pedagogies and Practices that Foster Student Learning and Success.”

In addition to presenting the keynote address, Kinzie will also host special event workshops for faculty, staff and students.

“The University is very happy and proud to welcome Dr. Jillian Kinzie, who will share her research in the implementation of high impact teaching practices both in and out of the classroom and strategies for improving access to these experiences for all students,” said Kate McCarthy, interim director of faculty development at CSU, Chico.

“We invite educators and students to take advantage of this learning opportunity, and to join us for our 20th annual conference as we celebrate the work of our outstanding colleagues and share our expertise in teaching and learning.”
