California State University, Chico will celebrate César Chávez Day with a number of special activities, including the popular ’Cats in the Community clean-up Monday, March 31.

CSU, Chico and other state campuses and offices are closed that day in observance of César Chávez’s birthday. For several days leading up to and including March 31, CSU, Chico students are encouraged to help out in the community and commemorate the holiday in thoughtful and respectful ways.

In addition to the events planned, the César Chávez Day Educational Planning Committee and other student leaders have been speaking to community groups and classes about César Chávez. The goal of the talks is to educate people about his life and legacy and deter negative behavior surrounding the holiday. In past years, some students and other community members have spent the holiday at Mexican-themed parties disrespectful to Chávez and all Hispanics.

At the ’Cats in the Community day of service last year, hundreds of students, faculty, staff and community members picked up trash and cleaned up locations in Chico. This year, volunteers will gather at 9 a.m., March 31, in the BMU Plaza and travel to a designated location. At 1 p.m., volunteers are invited to the Wildcat Recreation Center for food and games.
