California State University, Chico’s Summer Orientation program begins Tuesday, June 10, with the first of 23 sessions for new students enrolling this fall.

As of today, more than 4,300 incoming students and their accompanying family members had signed up for one of the sessions in June or July. That’s an increase from the same time last year.

A big focus during the orientation is providing students with faculty advising and assistance in registering for classes, said Summer O! coordinator Rebecca Berner. “We offer students priority registration, which is a huge incentive to participate,” she said.

Changes this summer include adding a second program in Spanish for parents and guests. Those sessions will be offered June 16 and July 7. Six sessions are offered for transfer students, an increase from past years, Berner said.

During orientation, students are introduced to campus values like civic engagement, sustainability and diversity. Peer advisors answer questions about freshmen leadership opportunities and ways to get involved.

On average, Berner said, about 95 percent of incoming freshmen and 75 percent of transfer students participate in Summer O! each year.

Sessions run Monday through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with check-in starting at 8 a.m. To learn more, visit http://ems.csuchico.edu/AAP/SummerOrientation/Information/home.html.
