Several weeks of special events and activities are planned at California State University, Chico, aimed at helping new incoming students successfully transition to university life.

Wildcat Welcome 2015 includes opportunities for new students to meet one another as well as returning students, faculty and staff. The week also includes mandatory trainings and department meetings for incoming freshmen and transfers.

Students began moving into residence halls today and will continue throughout the week. Each hall will hold additional welcome activities, including a movie each night this week.

Once again this year, Wildcat Welcome will feature a Trip ’n’ Dip group outing and swim in Upper Bidwell Park and an introduction to downtown Chico via the Thursday Night Market. Students participating in the Thursday Night Market experience will get a complimentary dinner ticket good at one of 20 local food vendors.

New students will have an opportunity to talk directly with faculty during mandatory Faculty Mentor Meetings on Saturday, Aug. 22. Groups of 10 to 20 students will meet with a faculty member for 50 minutes to ask questions they have about university life and discuss things they can do to be successful. Directly afterward, students will participate in Wildcat ROAR (Reach Out and Respond), a peer-led training program teaching students how to effectively respond during an emergency.

On Saturday, Aug. 29, students are invited to join in Be Chico!, a day of community service around the city. Another volunteer opportunity—a canned food drive to supply the Hungry Wildcat program, the University’s food pantry for students in need—will hold a culminating event at the Bell Memorial Union on Monday, Sept. 7. That event is organized by new Associated Students president Deanna Jarquin, a fifth-year psychology/women’s studies double major.
