New Wildcats attending university-level classes for the first time today are joining a healthy cohort of enrolled students this fall at California State University, Chico.

Students walk on campus August 24, 2015According to Barbara Fortin, associate vice president for Enrollment Management, enrollment for the 2015-16 academic year is on par with last year; total resident full-time equivalent students is estimated at 15,350, just slightly over the University’s annualized target enrollment. Total headcount, which includes non-resident (international) students, comes to about 17,200.

A total of 4,950 new students are expected to join the campus community this semester. Of those, 2,700 are first-time freshmen, 1,800 are transfers and 450 are graduate students.

While CSU, Chico serves students from all over the world, it is an important resource for those in our local 12-county region. This year, about 40 percent of transfer students and 13 percent of first-time freshmen are residents of the North State.

This fall’s incoming class boasts one of the strongest academic profiles in campus history. The average GPA of first-time freshman applicants was 3.20; the average for those admitted is 3.44. Last year, the average GPA for admits was 3.40.

The incoming class is also the most racially diverse in campus history: this year, 57.8 percent of first-time freshmen and 37.7 percent of incoming transfers are students of color.

“The characteristics exhibited by this year’s class lay the foundation for a strong academic experience at CSU, Chico, including high graduation and persistence rates,” Fortin said.

The University is currently accepting applications for the spring 2016 semester. Undergraduate students must apply by Aug. 31 at www.csumentor.edu; all graduate students must apply by Sept. 15; and international undergraduates must apply by Sept. 30.
