Once again, manufacturers from Northern California will showcase their technology and products at California State University, Chico on Thursday, Oct. 1, from 9 a.m. to 3 pm. in the Bell Memorial Union Auditorium. Held on National Manufacturing Day, the second annual North State Manufacturing Expo will focus on education and career opportunities for students and job seekers.

Last year over 1,200 people—including many students from sixth grade through college—attended the expo to learn more about manufacturing and the products being made here in the North State. Many of last year’s exhibitors are returning this year with hands-on equipment and displays, including a jet engine.

While the expo is not a job fair, each manufacturer displays a “job board” listing typical occupations within that company and the educational requirements for each occupation. For students nearing graduation, the event is an opportunity to meet potential employers and learn more about the companies.

New this year is a series of one-hour “intro classes” providing job seekers and college-level students a taste of different skills needed for manufacturing careers. Held throughout the day on a first-come, first-served basis, topics include press brake operation, CAD (computer-aided design), robotics, polymers and non-traditional careers for women.

A number of schools have pre-registered for concurrent tours of campus manufacturing and engineering labs, led by CSU, Chico manufacturing students.

The North State Manufacturing Expos is hosted by Grow Manufacturing, an initiative supported by Northern Rural Training and Employment Consortium (NoRTEC) and CSU, Chico. Grow Manufacturing promotes manufacturing education and employment in Northern California through events and the North State Manufacturers Directory, growmanufacturing.com, a website to connect regional manufacturers and suppliers.

The public is invited to attend free of charge. Confirmed exhibitors include

National Manufacturing Day (MFG DAY) was started by the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association, International in 2012 with a goal of celebrating manufacturing and inspiring the next generation of manufacturers. MFG DAY is on the first Friday in October, and many companies throughout the country offer plant tours and other events on that day. More information about the national event is at www.mfgday.com.
