Educators from around the state are invited to join California State University, Chico faculty, staff and students for the 21st annual Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) Conference Oct. 8–9 at CSU, Chico.

The 2015 conference theme, “Academic Tenacity: True Grit for Learning,” is woven throughout sessions focusing on developing resilience in the face of challenges and turning academic potential into academic successes.

The conference is presented by CELT, the Office of Faculty Affairs and the Division of Academic Affairs.

Kicking off the event is an annual faculty awards luncheon Thursday, Oct. 8, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Bell Memorial Union auditorium.

Several faculty will receive awards, including speech communication professor Zach Justus, 2014–15 Outstanding Teacher; history professor Kate Transchel, 2014–15 Outstanding Academic Advisor; history lecturer Timothy Sistrunk, 2014–15 Outstanding Lecturer; and recipients of this year’s Excellence in Online Instruction Awards.

Keynoting the luncheon is Rachel Beattie, director of Productive Persistence at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching at Stanford University. She will give a talk titled, “Productive Persistence: How to Promote & Sustain Students’ Mindsets.”

“We welcome friends and colleagues to the 21st annual CELT Conference to discuss research and best practices in learning and teaching,” said Justus, who also serves as interim director of Faculty Development. “Join us and educators throughout the region for good conversation and good company.”
