Competition Benefiting Children’s Hospital Moves Online

With their sights set on surpassing a cumulative total of $1.5 million, California State University, Chico students will hold several fundraising events in February for Up ’til Dawn, including a celebration on Friday, Feb. 27, from 7 p.m. to midnight in the Bell Memorial Union Auditorium.

CSU, Chico is among the top collegiate fundraisers in the annual national competition supporting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.

Historically a letter-writing campaign, this year the competition has moved to a digital format, and students have been emailing their friends, family and community members with requests for donations since the start of the year.

Events at a local pizza restaurant on Feb. 4 and at Acker Gym on Feb. 6 will help students reach their fundraising goals. Students who have raised at least $100 or sent at least 30 emails will be invited to the Feb. 27 celebration, which will feature food, games, prizes and laptops stations for sending last-minute donation requests.

Since 2000, CSU, Chico students have raised $1.48 million for St. Jude through annual large-scale letter-writing events. They were the first college students in the nation to reach the $1 million mark.

“Compared to the last 14 years, this will be more environmentally friendly and more in line with our sustainability principles as a university,” said third-year student Mat Fukuhara, director of the Up ’til Dawn executive board. “It also allows us to move toward monitoring how much money we’ve raised and to track our numbers in real time, rather than waiting for months after the event.”

In concert with the fundraising events, the Department of Biological Sciences will cohost a lecture Feb. 13 by Dr. Stacey Schultz-Cherry of the Department of Infectious Diseases at St. Jude. Her presentation, “Pathogenesis of Emerging RNA Viruses in High Risk Populations,” begins at 4 p.m. in Holt 170.
