At the ACP Best of Show competition March 1, CSU, Chico’s student newspaper took third place for large-school websites and ninth place for weekly newspapers.

"Two of the awards this year were part of a special online section theorion.com did about homelessness in Chico,” said Orion faculty adviser Mark Plenke. “It's work like this that shows our students and student-editors are interested in doing serious, public-service journalism about the community and its people. It's what we train them to do at Chico State, so it's gratifying to see this work recognized by the judges."

The Orion, established in 1975, is part of CSU, Chico’s nationally accredited Department of Journalism and Public Relations. The print newspaper comes out every Wednesday during the school year, and daily content can be found at theorion.com as well as through the paper’s mobile application and social media accounts. In 2005, The Orion was inducted into the Associated Collegiate Press Hall of Fame for its record of achievements.
