California State University, Chico’s Career Center will host five career events this fall as a strengthening economy has led to rising interest in hiring from a variety of organizations.

While the Career Center typically sees 400 new positions posted in its database during an average month, that figure has recently risen to 600 new postings, said Megan Odom, the center’s director.

A changing workforce is also benefiting students, as employers boost hiring in anticipation of worker retirements, according to Odom.

“It’s an exciting time for students if they are looking for jobs,” she said.

Higher employer interest translated to overflow attendance during a career and internship fair in April. The event had to expand from its original space inside Bell Memorial Union Auditorium to the concrete plaza outside to accommodate 125 organizations—up from the 100 that had attended the prior spring’s event.

The Career Center’s Education Hiring Fair reported a record turnout in March, with 120 school districts attending this year, representing an additional 20 school districts.

“The proactive companies are really coming here earlier and earlier” to recruit students to fill both internships and jobs, said Ken Naas, a career advisor with the Career Center.

Student attendance is also growing.

The Career Center’s Local Job Fair held in August drew 1,660 students, up from 600 student attendees during last year’s event. Odom attributed the increase to a wide mix of employers hiring for part-time, seasonal, internship and career positions. The event also benefitted from wider visibility after being incorporated into Wildcat Welcome 2016 activities for the first time, she said. In all, 62 groups from on and off campus recruited, up from 50 during the prior year.

Upcoming career events on campus include:

Grad School Fair
Wednesday, Sept. 14
10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
BMU Auditorium
Between 50 and 60 graduate schools from California and other states representing studies in medicine, law and other areas are expected to attend. The Grad School Fair is “for anybody, freshman through senior, to find out what grad school is about and what’s out there,” said Lora Ferguson, special projects and technical assistant with the Career Center. Graduate departments from across Chico State are expected to attend.

Business, IT and SAP Career Fair
Wednesday, Sept. 21
10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
BMU Auditorium
More than 90 employers are expected at this event, offering both career jobs and internships. Companies slated to attend include Foster Farms, Anheuser-Busch and Chevron Information Technology.

Networking Know-How
Wednesday, Oct. 19
6-7:30 p.m.
BMU Auditorium
At this event, a guest speaker will coach students on how to attend networking events, covering everything from effective social mingling to how to artfully break into conversations when a group is already talking. The event costs $5 for students.

Career and Internship Job Fair
Wednesday, Nov. 2
10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
BMU Auditorium
About 100 employers are expected from nonprofits, law enforcement agencies and the private sector. The event is geared toward students from all majors and typically draws between 800 and 1,000 students.

HealthShare
Wednesday, Nov. 16
3-4:30 p.m.
BMU Auditorium
This is the first year for this fair, which was created because “there are plenty of jobs in health care and we just need to get more people aware of our students,” said Naas, who is coordinating the event. Employers from about 10 health and allied health care companies will first hold a panel discussion and then take questions. There will be room for about 100 students to attend the event, which is expected to draw representatives from groups including Ampla Health, Cascade Orthopedic Supply and Kaiser Permanente.
