From a blood drive to a charity walk to raise money for breast cancer research, California State University, Chico’s social Greek organizations set records for philanthropic contributions during Greek Week 2016, which took place from October 9-16.

During Greek Week, members of CSU, Chico's fraternities and sororities work together in support of numerous philanthropic efforts in what is the biggest charity week of the year. In all, 1,100 students belonging to 14 CSU, Chico fraternities and sororities took part in multiple Greek Week 2016 charity events.

“We weren’t sure if our students would be able to top last year’s donations, but they met our challenge and exceeded beyond anything we could have imagined,” said Multicultural Greek Council Advisor Amanda R. Haydon.

“This is an incredible testament to the philanthropic spirit that our fraternities and sororities embody. We are very proud of them,” Haydon said.

During the BloodSource Blood Drive, CSU, Chico’s fraternities and sororities donated 667 pints of blood over two days, up from 647 pints last year. In addition, this year’s drive registered 33 marrow donors.

Canned food donations really spiked, with Greeks collecting 2,500 cans and non-perishable food items, more than double the 1,200 cans that the “Can”struction food drive program collected in 2015.

Half of the donated food items were given to the Wildcat Food Pantry for CSU, Chico students, while the remainder went to Chico’s Jesus Center, a homeless shelter that also offers vocational training and other services.

The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, held in Lower Bidwell Park, raised $31,400 for breast cancer research, more than triple the $10,000 donated last year.

Greek Week 2016 culminated with the Greek Talent Show, as the winning team earned the right to choose which local charity will receive the $1,350 raised from student donations during that event.

Fraternity and sorority members make up approximately 12 percent of the student population at CSU, Chico. Greek life membership provides students with opportunities including leadership development, scholarships, philanthropic endeavors and community involvement.

Greek Week is part of The Chico Experience Week, which was held October 7-16 and sponsored a host of activities on campus and across the city for Chico State alumni, parents and friends.
