Patrick Newell, director of the Digital Services Division and associate university librarian for Information Technology and Electronic Resources at Fresno State University, has been selected to serve as the dean of Meriam Library at California State University, Chico.

He replaces Sarah Blakeslee, who has served as interim dean since 2009. He begins his position Feb. 1.

Newell has more than 20 years of experience as a librarian in public universities and research institutes, including posts at UC San Francisco, the California Digital Library and the New York Academy of Medicine.

A fellow of the Frye Leadership Institute, Newell has been involved in administrative initiatives and emerging technology trends on a national level. With the American Library Association’s Office of IT Policy, he works to help educate librarians and the public about copyright issues including fair use and the public domain.

He holds a Ph.D. in education policy from UC Davis; master’s degrees in library and information science from UCLA and in philosophy from Fordham University; and a bachelor’s in religious studies and philosophy from Santa Clara University.

“Please join me in congratulating Dr. Newell and welcoming him to our community,” wrote interim provost Susan Elrod in a campus message. “We look forward to Dr. Newell’s leadership of the Meriam Library as an integral part of all of our programs at Chico State.”
