CSU, Chico Named Among “Top Universities for Professional Sales Education”

The Seufferlein Sales Program at California State University, Chico has been recognized by the Sales Education Foundation (SEF) as one of several “Top Universities for Professional Sales Education” in its 2016 listing. Now in its 10th year of rankings, the foundation recognized the University’s award-winning program for preparing students for successful careers in professional selling and for helping elevate the sales profession. 

The Seufferlein Sales Program began in 2008 and offers a 21-unit professional sales certificate to students in every major. Sales is a growing field that cross-cuts every sector, and CSU, Chico is leveraging its long-standing industry partnerships, alumni network, national sales competition and state-of-the-art facilities to prepare students to excel. 

“The recognition received by the Sales Education Foundation highlights the story we’ve been hearing from both students and corporate partners,” said Bill McGowan, the program’s administrative director. “The Seufferlein Sales Program offers great theoretical and practical training, from caring professors to helping students determine the best career opportunities and then succeeding in those opportunities.”

Reasons for Seufferlein’s high SEF ranking include its 100 percent job placement rate. As the program’s reputation and success continues to grow, so does enrollment, which has increased 15 percent in the last year.

Professional selling continues to be one of the most common types of jobs for students graduating with a business degree, with 60 percent of business majors and 88 percent of marketing majors starting their careers in a sales-related role. Baylor University reports that students from sales program average 2.8 job offers before graduation, and sales graduates, whose starting salaries average over $60,000 nationwide, report their career satisfaction at more than 77 percent.

The “SEF 2016 Annual Magazine” is now available on its website, www.salesfoundation.org. The top designation was awarded to 109 programs in the United States and 15 international programs.

SEF Executive Director Sally Stevens noted that companies should increasingly partner with university sales programs.

“Top sales organizations should take note of the programs featured in our listing and consider developing partnerships with these innovators who are educating the next generation of professional sales people,” she said in her 2016 Annual Letter from the Editor.

CSU, Chico is one of only three schools west of the Rockies and 60 schools in the world with a sales program recognized by the University Sales Center Alliance. A 2015 article in Comstock’s magazine, titled “Sales Pitch: Why More Universities Should Offer Sales Training,” lauded CSU, Chico for producing well-prepared sales executives and compared the value of sales recruits with professional sports draft picks. The University continues to assert itself in professional sales competitions, and last month, students won first place in the Western States Collegiate Sales Competition for the sixth year in a row.
