Accolades continue to roll in for California State University, Chico, as its online learning program for social science degrees was recently named the best value in the nation by the website AffordableColleges.com, which listed the most affordable online learning programs in the nation in more than 10 categories.

Additionally, the same website ranked CSU, Chico’s Liberal Studies Online Learning Program at No. 21 in the nation in terms of value.

Offered through Regional and Continuing Education, CSU, Chico’s Distance and Online Education offers bachelor’s degree programs in social science, liberal studies, and sociology, and a master’s program in nursing. More than 300 students have been admitted to online degree programs at CSU, Chico for the current term.

“In the early years of the program, we were servicing only the rural areas of the North State,” said Eugenie Rovai, coordinator of the social science program. “Now, we have a larger percentage of our distance students located in the metropolitan regions of California, like the Bay Area and LA basin.”

As the public’s need for distance learning evolves, the University’s online degree in social science continues to gain popularity, Rovai said. It now has the highest graduation rate of the online degree completion programs offered at CSU, Chico.

According to Rovai, the University initially offered distance-learning degrees through microwave television, transmitting classes to mountain-top antennas that relayed the signal to remote learning sites, from 1980 to 1995. From 1995 to 2000, the program was delivered through satellite, in which the University transmitted classes from its owned uplink to an orbiting satellite that communicated with learning sites throughout California. CSU, Chico’s current online delivery method has been in place since 2000, providing access for students on a much wider scale.

“The regular scheduling of courses makes a degree completion program within two years a common occurrence for our online students taking a full-load,” she said. “For those students with families and full-time jobs, the social science program offers a quality program that can be done on a part-time basis with archived lectures and fully online courses.”

In May, the University recognized graduating senior Yesenia Jones as she completed her sociology degree entirely online, without setting ever foot on the CSU, Chico campus. She received one of 40 degrees awarded in May that were completed through the online degree program.

Earlier this week, U.S. News & World Report released its annual Best College Rankings, in which CSU, Chico was named the No. 8-ranked public school in the West.
